Description of the thesis topic
Modeling of the age of ice in the Antarctic ice sheet, based on an innovative forward numerical model constrained by radar observations through inverse methods.
Activities:
The thesis is funded by ITN DEEPICE. DEEPICE is a research and education network on understanding ice-core indicators for understanding past climate dynamics. DEEPICE is funded by the European program HORIZON2020 and consists of 10 academic partners from 10 European countries, collaborating with 9 institutions from academia and industry. A total of 15 PhD students will be employed after selective recruitment and will work together through the DEEPICE consortium.
This thesis consists of :
- Developing a direct 3D model of the ice age in a polar ice cap based on an innovative numerical scheme.
- Developing an inverse method to constrain the direct model from isochronous observations obtained by low frequency radar.
- Deduce the optimal age field and ice trajectories for certain regions of Antarctica, in particular the Dome C region where the next European drilling project has started.
- If time permits, apply the method to other regions of Antarctica.
Skills:
- Numerical modeling.
- Inverse methods.
- Python programming language.
- Writing and speaking English.
- Experience in glaciology would be appreciated.
Work Context
The Institute for Environmental Geosciences (IGE) is a public research laboratory under the supervision of CNRS/INSU, IRD, the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA) and Grenoble-INP.
It brings together about 240 people, including 145 permanent members (researchers, teacher-researchers, engineers) and about 95 doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows and staff on fixed-term contracts. The laboratory also welcomes several dozen trainees and scientific visitors each year. The laboratory is located on three sites of the Grenoble University Campus (Molière, OSUG-B, and Bergès sites).
The IGE is one of the main laboratories of the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Grenoble (OSUG) which is a federative structure of the INSU.
The PhD candidate will develop his mission in the ICE3 team within the IGE and will be under the responsibility of Frédéric Parrenin, CNRS research director.
Constraints and risks
The candidate for this position may be of French or foreign nationality, but must not have resided or carried out his or her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years preceding the taking up of the position. The candidate must, at the date of recruitment, be within the first 4 years of his or her research career and must not have a thesis degree.
Trips are planned in the framework of the thesis and in particular to Bremerhaven in Germany, in the framework of the scientific collaboration with Professor Olaf Eisen at the AWI, a specialist in radar observations.
The research will be done in either French or English, however it is expected that the non-French speaking candidate will strive to learn the basics of French in order to facilitate communication and integration in the laboratory.
