Call for abstracts session GD6.3 "Fluid presence and migration within the crust and lithosphere: advances in the study of the fluid-rock interactions using multi-disciplinary approaches"

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the session GD6.3 "Fluid presence and migration within the crust and lithosphere: advances in the study of the fluid-rock interactions using multi-disciplinary approaches" at the upcoming EGU 2025 meeting in Vienna, Austria, from 27th April to 2nd May.

Conveners: Alessio Lavecchia (University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Italy), Grazia De Landro (University of Naples "Federico II", Italy ), Kristóf Porkoláb (Institute of Earth Physics and Space Science, Hungary), Serena Panebianco (CNR - Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis, Italy) and Alexander Koptev (GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Germany).

This session seeks to bring together researchers from diverse disciplines to explore the complex roles that fluids play in shaping the characteristics and evolution of the Earth's crust and lithosphere. The deadline for the abstract submission is the 15th January 2025.

Session Overview:
Fluids within the Earth's crust and lithosphere are integral to a variety of geodynamic processes, including faulting, volcanism, metamorphism, and hydrothermal activity. The interaction of these fluids with the surrounding rock can significantly influence tectonic and geochemical processes, ranging from the formation of ore deposits to the dynamics of earthquake faults and volcanic eruptions.

We invite contributions that explore the role of fluids at all scales, from the laboratory to the field, and across a range of geological settings. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Fluid migration, transport, and partitioning within the crust and lithosphere
  • Fluid-rock interactions at fault zones and subduction zones
  • Hydrothermal processes and their link to volcanism and ore formation
  • The role of fluids in tectonic deformation and earthquake mechanics
  • Laboratory studies of fluid-rock interactions
  • Modeling and simulations of fluid transport in porous and fractured media, with implications on the characteristics of geothermal systems
  • The influence of fluid activity on lithospheric geochemistry and mantle dynamics

Key Questions:

  • How do fluids influence the mechanical properties of the Earth's crust?
  • What is the impact of fluid-driven processes on the evolution of continental and oceanic lithosphere?
  • How do fluids contribute to the formation and evolution of deep Earth resources such as geothermal energy, oil, and natural gas?
We welcome both experimental and theoretical approaches, as well as observational and field studies that address these critical interactions and their implications for Earth's dynamic systems.
