Cordiali saluti,

Dear listeners,

I've started the new century of Geology Bites podcasts with one on deep time.

I've always been fascinated by the unimaginably long timescales that are commonly bandied about in geology.  One reason for this is the link between the timescale of Earth history and the cosmic timescale, which is only three times longer.  Perhaps those of you who have handled a piece of Lewissian gneiss or other Archean rock will have experienced the thrill of holding something that was assembled so very long ago.

As I say in the podcast introduction, I had been looking for some time for someone to talk about deep time from a historical, psychological, and perhaps even philosophical perspective.  It was this piece, written for the Geological Society of London, that convinced me that it had to be Richard Fortey.

As always, I am happy to hear from you.  And if you like the series, please give it a rating and, even better, a brief review on your podcast app.

I hope you enjoy the episode.

Oliver
