I just posted an episode with NASA's Joe MacGregor on mapping the geology of the 80 percent of Greenland that is buried under a kilometers-thick ice sheet.
What comes across most strikingly is the sheer amount of diverse data he and his colleagues assembled in the attempt to characterize the rocky surface below the ice. The data comes from decades of airborne and satellite measurements of geophysical properties — seismic, gravity, magnetic, and of the surface topography. The new map shows three new provinces that do not appear to protrude to the exposed edges. Intriguingly, two major ice streams originate at the edges of the provinces. His results also show hitherto unseen networks of long and straight valleys. The research community now needs to figure out what all this means for the nature and origin of Greenland's subglacial rocks.
