Michel Ballèvre is an outstanding French geologist who has made continuous and innovative contributions to the advancement of Alpine geology. His research activity, which began with his PhD thesis in 1986 on the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Gran Paradiso massif (directed by Fr. Choukroune and J.-R. Kienast), is characterized by a multidisciplinary and cutting-edge approach, based on detailed field survey and geological mapping, structural analysis, igneous and metamorphic petrology, whole rock and mineral chemistry, isotope dating, basin reconstruction and kinematic models. Author of over 40 papers on the Italian Western Alps, he has made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the subduction stages and collisional evolution of the Alpine orogen.Commissione
