Oggetto: "Meeting of EGU with the Representative of the national geoscientific societies"
Dear EGU President,
Dear EGU Policy Officer,
I'm writing you following up the round table of the national geoscientific societies representatives held in Wien at EGU general assembly last Tuesday, April 9th, 2019.
In that occasion the Società Geologica Italiana (SGI) suggested to have a new meeting of the President and Policy officer of EGU with the representative of Geoscientific associations in Italy next fall during the final activities included in the program of Matera the 2019 capital of European culture.
We propose such a meeting to discuss the dissemination of the Culture of Geosciencies in the modern Society and the action to undertake with the policy makers for a better attention of politics to sustainability exploiting of geo-resources and the prevention from natural and geological hazards. Such event might be the occasion for signing a Memorandum of Understanding on such themes. To attract attention of the Society on Geosciences the SGI would also like to propose to EGU and other national geoscientific societis to launch the Birthday of Geosciences (October 24th, being the starting date of the Pompeii Eruption, the first event with a written record made by Plinius the young).
In consideration of the very strict times for organise the new 2019 meeting in Matera next fall, we would like to let you know that the SGI placed a request for financial support to the Matera 2019 Foundation and the inclusion of such meeting in the official activity of the Matera 2019 manifestation. So far we did not receive any reply to our requests. Thus if we will not receive a positive reply by April 30th, we will regrettably suggest to move the meeting to fall 2020, in Trieste that in such a year would the Capital of Scientific Culture hosting ESOF 2020.
Hoping to find the favour of EGU council to our proposal, we remain,
Yours Sincerely
Sandro Conticelli
Lettera SGI-EGU
