Yasushi Watanabe was born in Kyoto and attended Hokkaido University, where he received a B.Sc. degree in Geology in 1982. In 1985, he joined the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) and was engaged in geological mapping at various scales and metallogenic study of epithermal deposits in Hokkaido.In 1996, he received a Ph.D. with a focus on metallogenesis of the Kitami epithermal gold province in the southwestern Kuril arc from Hokkaido University. In the late 1990s, he conducted research on the El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit in Chile and other deposits in Mongolia. During this period, Yasushi was a technical advisor for the Metal Mining Agency of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and he was involved in domestic and international mineral exploration projects by these agencies.
After the reorganization of GSJ in 2001, he served as the leader of the Mineral Resources Research Group from 2003 to 2008 and, later, prime senior geologist of the GSJ. Beginning in 2005, Yasushi led the GSJ's Rare Metals Exploration and Evaluation Project with his group members, and he has investigated rare earth and rare metal deposits from around the world. In 2014, he moved to Akita University, where he has been teaching economic geology and mineralogy and supervising undergraduate and graduate students who study a wide range of mineral deposits, including porphyry Cu, epithermal Au and base metals, PGE sulfide, and IOCG as well as rare-metal alkaline granites, laterite Ni, and ion-adsorption REE.
He has published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and given presentations in universities, institutes, and geological societies worldwide, including as the 2004 SEG Regional Vice President Lecturer.
