Presentation and aims
Giampaolo Pialli was a brilliant structural and regional geologist of the University of Perugia suddenly died 20 years ago, at the age of 59. Giampaolo has been a teacher and friend of many of us and we still miss him. Since the end of the 70s, he created the first Italian structural-geology based research group in seismotectonics.
Giampaolo was an open-minded and inclusive researcher, always open to dialogue and discussion and interested in the use of multidisciplinary approaches working at different scales for the solution of geological problems. These are also the traits and the salient features of the CRUST, the Italian inter-university center for seismotectonics which involves 12 Italian Universities with the common aim to better understand earthquake/faults interactions and to build a realistic 3D unified structural-seismotectonic representation of Italy. This model is finalized to a better evaluation of the seismic hazard and risk reduction.
The workshop will consist of two-day conference and is aimed to favor exchanges of ideas and opinions between Italian and European geologists and geophysicists who operate on active tectonics, seismotectonics and seismogenesis using different methodologies, with different spatial and temporal scales. Italy is as an ideal study area where deep geological processes are associated with surface expressions in active crust-scale tectonic contexts with different kinematics. These evidences allow a better understanding the overall earthquake process cycle.
We look forward for presentations on 3D geometry, kinematics and dynamics of Italian Quaternary faults and earthquakes and their structural representation, at both local and regional scale. At the same time, presentations on earthquake geology and seismology, tectonic geodesy, overtime and present-day stress and deformation, modeling of crustal architecture and dynamic are highly welcome. Innovative approaches and new data aiming at developing novel ideas are particularly encouraged.
An ambitious science goal of the CRUST workshop will be to pose the basis for building an enlarged European Seismotectonic Community and starting "incubate ideas" for common participation to international scientific projects.
We invite all the researchers who are interested in these topics, and who are willing to contribute to the meeting, to communicate a first interest filling the attached form (in word format) and send back to massimiliano.porreca@unipg.it before 31st December 2018. In order to properly organize the conference logistics, sending pre-registration form is highly recommended. The Workshop is free of charge.
The second circular, containing the provisional program, including the Scientific Sessions, will be send in the first half of January, 2019. The deadline for formal abstract submission will be 30 March 2019. The final Scientific Program will be defined after the submission of the abstracts (third circular). The official languages of the event are English and Italian.
The authors may publish the presented works in a Special Issue dedicated to the memory of Giampaolo Pialli.
We hope to receive hints of interest from many of you and to make Giampaolo Pialli once again proud of us.
Venues and times
The Workshop will be held in Perugia (Italy) from 9th to 10th July 2019 in the fascinating location of the San Pietro complex, which includes the basilica, three cloisters, the bell tower and several buildings that embody the monastery, the Department of Agriculture of University of Perugia (http://dsa3.unipg.it/), and the seismic observatory "Andrea Bina".
